In 1979, a young and enthusiastic electronic technician named Rich Igo began his journey with Ampex.
Starting as an Electronic Technician Level 1, Rich worked on the Time Base Corrector (TBC) line test set. This essential tool corrected timing errors in video signals to ensure smooth playback. It was an exciting time at Ampex, a company transitioning from its leadership in the entertainment industry to focus more on defense and digital solutions.
Rich’s dedication and skill quickly became evident, and within six months, he was promoted to Electronic Technician Level 2. He joined the Video Product Recorder (VPR) Field Service Technician team, took on final product audits, and eventually moved entirely into field service, installing and servicing Ampex equipment around the world.
Field service was demanding and adventurous. Rich often found himself in far-off locations, tackling complex technical issues, adapting to new environments, and managing unexpected equipment challenges. Whether he was troubleshooting under pressure or learning to navigate a new city, Rich enthusiastically embraced each experience. He knew he could always count on the support of his team back home, who provided invaluable assistance when needed.
During this period, Ampex was undergoing significant changes. The company was downsizing as it shifted its focus from entertainment technology to the defense sector. Rich witnessed friends and colleagues lose their jobs due to acquisitions and reorganizations. Despite the uncertainty, his commitment never wavered. He embodied the resilience and dedication that helped Ampex navigate these challenging times.
One of the most significant projects Rich worked on was the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS). This involved integrating Ampex’s data storage systems into the SBIRS ground segment, a critical component for national defense. Managing large volumes of data and maintaining consistent performance under demanding conditions was no small feat. Rich’s expertise was crucial to successfully deploying and maintaining these systems, ensuring that Ampex played a key role in providing vital missile warning capabilities.
Rich also showcased Ampex’s innovations at major trade shows like the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Las Vegas and the European National Association of Broadcasters in Montreux, Switzerland. These events were essential for demonstrating Ampex’s innovative spirit during a time when the company was redefining itself in a competitive landscape. Rich’s ability to communicate complex technologies with clarity and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on clients and industry peers.
Perhaps one of Rich’s most unique roles was as a member of the “fire team,” a specialized group ready to travel anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice to resolve critical customer issues, often involving equipment from other vendors. One memorable Thanksgiving, Rich found himself in Tampa, Florida, working tirelessly to keep a TV station on the air due to an integration issue. His Thanksgiving dinner was a simple chicken meal from Boston Market, a humble reminder of the personal sacrifices he made for his work. During his two years on the fire team, Rich was home for only about six weeks, highlighting his role’s extraordinary demands.
As Ampex moved further into the defense sector, Rich began working extensively on classified Department of Defense programs and projects. Assignments took him to places like Hawaii, where he installed Ampex’s mini Recorder (miniR) in an unmanned NASA Global Hawk aircraft. The secrecy surrounding these projects meant that Rich often couldn’t share details with his boss or family. When asked about his destinations, he would humorously reply, “I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.” Despite the secrecy, his contributions were invaluable, supporting Ampex’s mission to bring excellence to the forefront of innovation.
Rich’s travels took him around the globe, from England to India, Australia to South Korea, and across the United States. He easily adapted to driving on the left side of the road in countries like England and Australia and navigated diverse cultures. While the opportunity to witness phenomena like the Northern Lights in Alaska was thrilling, the constant movement eventually took its toll. Endless airports, shifting time zones, and missing family became challenging aspects of his life on the road.
Despite these hardships, Rich remains deeply grateful for his time at Ampex. Over forty-five years, he watched the company evolve from a pioneer in analog recording to a leader in capturing data at the edge. He experienced triumphs and struggles, times when the company thrived and faced uncertainty. Through it all, Rich never lost faith in Ampex or the people who made it special.
“Saying goodbye is not easy,” Rich reflects. “Ampex was more than just a job; it was a family.” He takes pride in knowing that Ampex is thriving once again and leaves with a heart full of memories, friendships, and a sense of fulfillment. Looking ahead, he eagerly anticipates spending more time with his wife and family, catching up on the moments he missed while traveling for work. To his colleagues, he offers a heartfelt message:
“I wish you all the best. Thank you for making this journey worthwhile.”
Rich’s words carry the weight of countless shared experiences—the laughter, the challenges, the late nights, and the victories. His story is not just about his contributions to Ampex but also about the friendships formed and the spirit that binds everyone together. It is a story of resilience, dedication, and the unbreakable bond of a team that weathered decades of change together.
Nick Duran, General Manager of Ampex, shares his thoughts on Rich’s legacy:
“I first met Rich in the secure room of our old Colorado Springs facility, a space filled with inventory. He was our ‘Maytag’ guy who could fix anything. From that first meeting, it was clear that Rich truly knew his craft. His depth of knowledge and unwavering dedication to Ampex were obvious from the start. Over the years, he has been a pillar of support, always there to lend his expertise and a helping hand. More than that, he’s been a great friend. Rich, thank you for everything you’ve done for Ampex and for all of us who have had the privilege of working with you.”
Rich’s journey is a testament to the resilience and spirit of both himself and Ampex as they navigated decades of change and challenges. His unwavering commitment not only helped steer the company through turbulent times but also forged bonds that will last a lifetime. As he steps into a well-deserved retirement, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who have been part of his remarkable journey.
