Protecting Industrial Control Systems & Operational Technology with Machine Learning

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Operational Technology (OT) systems are a vital part of Japan’s and the US’s critical national infrastructure, yet they are among the most vulnerable systems in use. Many were originally designed before security became an issue, so traditionally they are not well protected nor are they being well monitored.  Yes, there is the data historians and HMI screen that operators watch and monitor but how do you know that the data you are seeing is correct?  How do you know that there are not new devices on your network?

Standard power plants, refineries, water, and manufacturing plants will typically have thousands of real-time processes that generate a high volume of data. The ability to monitor let alone analyzing and monitoring this data to detect anomalies that might be caused by a cyber-attack is currently next to impossible due to the fact that there are not adequate technologies that monitor the actual endpoint devices and the operators are not trained as cyber security professions.

However, Ampex Intelligent Systems is working to solve the issues of improper ICS / OT network situational awareness and the ability to monitor, detect and defend the ICS / OT network.  We are doing this using advanced mathematical and computer science techniques in machine learning.

We will discuss the problems across all critical infrastructures such as: poor or inadequate network situational awareness, poorly training analysts, inability to cross reference critical variables for incident response and how Ampex plans to address these issues with machine learning.
